Question 81
As an atheist. do you ever think that it is worse to have been born
than never have been born at all?
- Can't tell because I've never been unalive. I know those near death experiences are quite pleasant though. (Martin #1450 )
- Nope. Not everything is fun, but then if everything was life wouldn't have a meaning because happyness would be the standard emotion. We would
be like the Smurfs ;-> (Rune Boesjoe #1460)
- Well, despite the ups and downs that life can bring, and those damn unpredicatible sharp turns that lead us careening down a mountain side
on occasion, I like my life, and am glad to be alive; I am not looking
to exit this life any time soon. I have too much to do, and see, and be. Worse than not being born? I am glad I was born, but if I had never
been born, I wouldn't have known anything. (Chani #1118)
- Certainly not. (Frank Wustner -The Deadly Nightshade- #119)
- No. What's interesting though is the number of theists who seem to think that is how THEY would feel if it weren't for their religion. I can't imagine how bleak someone's life would have to be to believe that.
(Keith Doyle)
- Nope. I'm here, and I really happen to like me!
Besides, if I weren't born, "I" wouldn't have an opinion on it.... :-)
(Andy Longton #168)
- Tricky. To cut a long story short, as it were, one can imagine
circumstances where a particular life is so full of pain, misery under circumstances that are unchangeable that it would be better not to have been born.
I Incidently note, with some amusement, that the Bible agrees with me on this one! (Therion Ware #422)
- Heck no. I'm having a great time. (Carin #1535)
- I'm too arrogant and self-centered for that.
I'm happy now. I'm glad I'm here and content that I'm going away someday.
But that'll be another 70 years I hope.
For some it is, but my life isn't that miserable that I'd wish I'd never been born. (DJ Nozem #1465)
- Hardly. I'm nearsighted, overweight, and bald, but I'm lucky enough
to be comparitively intelligent, and living in a place where I can pretty well do anything I want that I'm willing to get the training and/or education for. I have family that foolishly cares for me, pets that
think I'm a deity, and I have computer toys to play with.
However, there's a lot of bodies on the globe that seem to be born into pain and misery and never have a chance to get out of it. For them the question might be more meaningful.
Or the crack babies without working brains that ARE going to die, the
only question being when and how painfully. Or the children born into households where they are abused until old enough to tell, then killed
for silence.
No, I'm not sorry to be alive - today. There've been times when I forget all the above. It's
hard sometimes to see how good things are. (Dewey Henize #122)
