Question 33
Have any atheists in this or any other newsgroup joined any atheist organizations?
Examples: American Atheists, an atheist 'church?
- Well, I am a Unitarian.... have been for years. An awful lot of fundies think we're not even a church. But the group is comfortable with atheists as members. (Suzane #62)
- I was a Unitarian for a couple years over 20 years ago. The Philadelphia Church also seemed to accept atheists, though there weren't any actual discussions of this (I have tons of pamphlets). Most of the people seemed to be deists, though others probably were atheists like myself in search of a group to belong to. The services were very churchlike, which made me uncomfortable, but I enjoyed the music and sermons. The sermons spoke very little of religion, but more of life and the world in general. I heard that our minister had been transferred to Boston shortly after I moved. That must have been a real feather in his cap. He seemed to be a nice guy, too. I regret never having a chance to speak to him one on one.
I'll never forget one time when the mother of one of the people who went
to this church attended a service. She somehow managed to do this when he wasn't there. I guess she didn't want to have to explain why she was there to him. She sat silently throughout the service until it came to the part where people could make comments, if they wanted to. After a couple people spoke, she stood up and told us all how wonderful she felt the church was and how she felt better now about her son being a Unitarian. Then, she went off into how grateful she was to Jesus that her son belonged there and how she was going to thank him in her prayers and would pray for all of us. As you can imagine, this did not go over well with the church members (including me), but aside from a few groans and grumbles, no one said anything to her. The woman happily left as ignorant as she had been when she entered the building. She meant well, I suppose and, hopefully, didn't bother her son about his choice of church after that.
I currently am a member of American Atheists. (Michelle Malkin #1)
- Not me, Michelle. I don't see any reason to do so. (Stoney #9)
- Does a philosophical discussion group count? We were all primarily
atheist. (Dan Rose #500)
- Not yet. (erikc #2)
