Question 17
What helps you remain an atheist?
- Open the bible and read any significant portion of it. Anyone who can't tell it was written by primitive, superstituous people isn't paying very close attention. (Dennis McDermott #1017)
- The logic part and the fact that people in religion tend to ignore what is real and true around them. Also listening to X-ian friends. That's what mainly put me over the edge. Also, reading the bull**** in daily devotionals and knowing a sky pixy isn't watching me and i am responsible for my actions! (Justin Thomas #985 )
- Believe it or not: religious writings! I can really get quite angry
reading these, and the more I read them, the stronger i get convinced
of my atheism. (CyberDude)
- Easy: I went to church last weekend and I felt like I was watching
tribal voo-doo.
I just attended the indoctrination (christening) of my great-niece, and
I think I've finally got it. Religion is simply the result of an
ignorant society using the same hammer (God) for every nail (unanswered question) that came along. Oopha! What a farce. All those sad faces, looking to the pulpit for guidance, and receiving the same lame advice that's been prescribed for the last 2,000 years -- nothing. There's nothing new happening in church. They read the same book over and over, looking for new meaning. The same lame stories, inpreted through
several generations and languages before reaching their eyes, and then
they try so deperately to make sense of them. It's so sad. My
grandparents are so devout. It will kill them to know I am an atheist.
I won't tell them.
Religion still exists due to simple Freudian denial: Most people refuse
to believe that their parents shoveled so much supernatural bullshit
down their throats.
Families like the Phelps Klan are desperate to retain their power base.
The sheep are clearing the wool from their eyes and wandering away from
the flock. They refuse to be further fleeced.
Religion is just another form of entertainment, like TV or Monday Night Football. Tax the churches, they're a business. (Kevin R. Pierce #947)
- Theists. (Bob Haynes #8)
- Considering the alternative.
Also, all the regulars on this newsgroup - and I don't mean only the
atheists. (June Gill #364)
- I was born this way. I just take it for granted that it's a natural way
of life. It seems we are a superstitious species and the theist remind
me everyday how crazy they make the world. Atheism is my oasis in the
religious desert (Steven Knight #855)
- Listening to the arguments of theists. (Rasmus Gjesdal #700)
- I'm still able to think for myself.
As far as my belief that religion in general and xianity in particular
is a pestilence, well, all I have to do is look around at my "good xian" neighbors and read the crap that the fundimaniacs post here. Thier
actions and words speak for themselves. (Erikc #2)
- Common sense and intelligence.
Frequent looks at the alternative. (Suzane #62)
