What do you think are the worst books you've ever read?

Since you used the plural, I'll give 2 that I've read entirely:

The Bible

Next to the Babble, or the Catholic Catechism, the worst book I have ever read was Velikovsky's "Worlds in Collision". This was his ideas about how Earth's history, including biblical events such as the flood and the parting of the Red Sea, geology, and even biology were caused by near misses of Mars and Venus. Although, I was a teenager at the time, it didn't take me long to see that this was nothing but pseudoscience based on a few wacky assumptions. This was in the '50's and I also recall reading some far out books on UFO's at that time. (John Hachmann #1782)

I once threw away a book by andrea dworkin. The *only* book I ever considered bad enough to trash.

I detest most of the books my Christian friends have asked me to read. I thought Hannibal was terrible. (I don't generally like novels anyway)

"Mein kampf" is possibly the worst book ever written. Not only was Hitler evil, he was a terrible author.

Anything by L. Ron Hubbard isn't worth the paper it is printed on.

Also, to add to what others have said, I would rather throw up blood and bile 10 or 11 times than read C. S. Lewis' "Chronicles of Narnia" again. And I've done both, so...

Oh, and "Genesis revisited" by Zacharia ... someone? Has anyone else read this book? Or others in the series? The topic had potential for a good kooky "non-fiction" book, but it was dull, dull, dull. (Zomby Woof)

A few of the books of the OT are absolutely horrible to read (e.g Leviticus).

Back in the 1970's, I read a couple of books about the 'mysteries' of the Bermuda Triangle, which were also pretty bad.

Some of the Christian literature I've read has also been horrible (e.g. 'Hind's Feet on High Places') (pan #1432)

I don't remember either the author or the title, but it was a science fiction novel about a monster ravaging the English countryside.

It was like a giant amoeba and just got bigger and bigger. No one knew where it had come from or what to do with it: nothing worked. They even tried an atom bomb, but that just broke into up into oodles of small things which reassembled in a few days.

Finally it encircled London. It was so big and heavy that all the underground train tunnels under it collapsed and it gradually shrank, threatening to wipe out several million people.

Everyone panicking ... the scientists all at a loss.

What on Earth to do?

The bishop of London got loads of people to march around spending an entire chapter chanting the most boring hymns ever written.

There was this symbolic logic II textbook who's author is *verrrry* lucky I can't remember his name or I would have to Kill him and if he was already dead I would have to desecrate his body or grave in some horrible manner. It's like he was drunk when he organised it and on dope or acid when he wrote it...ghaaa!

Aside from that really I try to avoid any book that think might be not to my liking. I think the last really book I read and discoved I *loathed* it was the first of the Thomas Covenant Series of Novels. I have blotted the name of it from my memory so I can live at least a halfway sane life. (Dr. Necrophage)

I just remembered - Natures first law - the raw food diet, by Stephen Arlin, Fouad Dini and David Wolfe - it's full of presumptions a-la all people who have gotten illnesses have been eating cooked food, so cooked food must be bad and the like, such a how Nature (yes, they capitalise it) have provided us with the perfect food and that we ruin this gift by cooking it - each chapter ends with the mantra "cooked food is poison" and they come on with the usual claim of having an universal truth - ending with a claim that anyone disagreeing have been brainwashed by the evil scientists, or simply have no will power - and then a "nice" section on how to spread the word - surely you need no deity in order to be superstitious and intollerant. *shakes head* (Nikitta #1759)
